D&D: How DMs Can Plan Around Unpredictable Players

As a DM in Dungeons & Dragons, it can be troublesome when players go opposite the anticipated direction, but there are ways to not only save the game from fractured plots but even work in character's spontaneous actions and decisions for a stronger and more reactive story. No matter how good any DM is, Dungeons & Dragons is an unpredictable world even for the guiding hand. Sometimes a player uses a technique the DM didn't foresee to circumvent or overcome an obstacle that was meant to be impassable at least for a time, sometimes a player's interests or motivations lie in a different direction than the intended path, and sometimes the dice themselves create an alternate universe that few if any of the players intended.
